Tara Oluwafemi is a PhD student in the Department of Art History at Rice University. Her research examines Afrofuturism in visual culture and architecture, situating these explorations alongside the material realities of space travel and the histories of colonization that shape them. She focuses on the legacy of Soviet and Cold War initiatives on the African continent in relation to the Space Race, bringing these histories into dialogue with contemporary space exploration efforts. Tara holds a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where she was awarded the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for leadership and professional merit, and a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies and French from Amherst College.
