Marina Hutchins is a Ph.D Candidate in the Saltz Lab in the Biosciences Department. Her research investigates how individuals learn by observing the behaviors of others, especially in an aggressive context. By using fruit flies as a study system, Marina is able to incorporate questions about genetic variation and evolutionary feedbacks into her research. She has mentored over 18 undergraduate students in the lab, including 4 community college students through a program she created to provide research opportunities for underrepresented students in STEM fields. Marina is dedicated to using inclusive pedagogy to help close the academic performance gap for minority students in introductory STEM courses. She has extensive experience working in various teaching, tutoring, and mentoring roles and recently completed the CTE coursework to obtain the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning. When not teaching or in the lab, Marina enjoys basketball, exploring Houston's food scene, and reading thriller novels.
