David Wilkie joined the Department of History at Rice in 2026. He researches marginalized religious groups in the U.S. South and is especially interested in enslaved religion in the 19^th century. His current research focuses on enslavedwomen’s religious experiences and the ways in which these religious experiences shaped enslaved women’s understanding of themselves, their communities, and white enslavers. His work on enslaved women’s history has appeared in Journal of Texas History (2025) and in Journal of the South Carolina Historical Association (2026). His most recent article, which examines the religious assimilation of French Huguenots in seventeenth-and eighteenth-century South Carolina, will appear in Anglican and Episcopal History. In his free time, he enjoys pleasure reading, running, and gardening.
