Jose Luis Olmos, Jr. (Joey), received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Rice University where his research focus on structural enzymology led to the development of time-resolved X-ray crystallography methods using X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs). As a graduate student at Rice, he also took on teaching and outreach opportunities, including serving as co-Director and mentor for the BioXFEL summer undergraduate research program for four years. This program aimed to increase the participation of underrepresented and underserved students in science with research experiences in biophysics and other XFEL-related topics. Further, he developed sections of NSCI120 with Dr. Sandra Bishnoi, and collaborated with Dr. Jamie Catanese on the development of BIOS211 projects. A native of South Texas, Joey graduated from the University of Texas at Austin where he mentored students in the Freshman Research Initiative. Prior to returning to the Department of BioSciences as a faculty lecturer, he completed post-doctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.
