Hua Gong

Hua Gong joined the Department of Sport Management as an Assistant Professor in 2020. Gong received his Ph.D. in sport and entertainment management from the University of South Carolina. He earned his Master of Science in sport management from Texas A&M University and Bachelor of Science in international business economics from the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.

Gong has extensive work experience in the sport industry. He served as a statistical analyst for the New York Knicks front office in the 2015-2016 NBA season. As a statistical analyst, Gong was responsible for collecting basketball data, managing databases, performing statistical analysis, building data visualization apps, etc. for the team. Prior to joining the New York Knicks, he also worked as a video assistant for the Texas A&M men’s basketball team from 2013 to 2015. In that role, Gong assisted the coaching staff in analyzing game videos and performance data.

Gong’s research interests are in the areas of sports analytics and sports economics. His work has been presented at several academic conferences, including the Eastern Economic Association Conference, Southern Economic Association Conference, North American Society for Sport Management Conference, and Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow Conference. Gong’s research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Global Sport Management. Gong will lead the department’s effort in teaching and research of sports analytics. He is proficient in programming languages, such as Python, R, SQL, HTML, PHP, and JavaScript.
