Dr. Lee is an assistant professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering. She received her B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her doctoral research focused on optical and structural characterization of low dimensional materials at nanoscale. After her Ph.D., Dr. Lee served as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Columbia Nano Initiative at Columbia University. During this time, she expanded her research area into 2D device fabrication and electrical characterization. In January 2024, Dr. Lee joined the faculty at Rice University, starting her own lab in the Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering.

Research Areas

Dr. Lee’s group focuses on exploring optoelectronic and photonic properties of low-dimensional quantum materials at nanoscale to develop devices for next generation electronic and information technology. To achieve this, her group specializes in scanning microscopy (utilizing electrons, photons, and metallic tip as as probes) that enable to see the atoms and their nanostructures, to quantify their properties, and to control them. Her research encompasses designing new quantum materials, visualizing microscopic nature of quantum materials, and realizing novel devices.
