I began sociolinguistic fieldwork as a team member of the Research on Dialects of English in Oklahoma (RODEO) Project, studying language variation and language attitudes across regional and social varieties of English within the state. This work led to focusing on language ideologies — including standard language ideologies, notions of "sounding country", and "sounding gay". Later research focused on communities of drag performers (mostly in Oklahoma) and the ways language is employed and how it reflects the complex situations the multicultural communities navigate life. I'm also interested in the variable ways language is used to construct identity in interaction and performance. More recently, I've been interested in tracking the ways that linguistic innovations spread from one community to another (e..g., from African American Women's Language to broader Drag Culture) and how social media and popular culture play a role in its spread to other communities more broadly. Here at Rice, I have plans to continue studying regional and social dialects of English and Spanish, the linguistic landscape of the city, and the ways that language and performance are intertwined in variable ways.
