Amelie Carlton, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer at Rice University. She traded energy commodities before receiving her PhD in Economics. Her areas of expertise are macroeconomics, energy and financial markets.
Dr. Carlton currently teaches Macroeconomics to undergraduate Rice students and a master’s class for the Center of Energy Studies at the Baker Institute. She has earned various awards for teaching including the 2017 Malcolm Gillis Award for Distinction in Undergraduate Teaching in Economics, the 2019 Sarah A. Burnett Teaching Prize in the Social Sciences, the 2021 George R. Brown Prize for Excellence in Teaching, the 2023 George R. Brown Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and a Favorite Professor at the Scholar Athlete Celebration many times. She is also a Faculty Associate at Rice University’s Baker residential college, where she was named the 2017 Outstanding Faculty Associate. Dr. Carlton is committed to helping students succeed in the classroom and explore internship opportunities beyond her classroom.
Dr. Carlton’s primary research interests are in Macroeconomics and Financial Markets, especially the relationship between economic growth, oil prices and yield curves.
