Welcome to CEE

Born and raised in Iran, Hesam has developed a passion for employing mathematical tools and engineering insights to solve decision-making problems in the built environment. As part of his Ph.D. studies, he focuses on modeling the decentralized nature of the decision-making process across real-world interdependent networks such as civil infrastructure system. To this end, he employs discrete optimization techniques, hierarchical statistical models, and game-theoretic concepts. Before landing in Rice, Hesam studied at the Sharif University of Technology, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a master’s degree in Earthquake Engineering. His master’s thesis is on risk-based prioritization of buildings for retrofit. He is an amateur photographer, avid Persian music listener, and lazy soccer player.

Research Areas

Decentralized decision-making, interdependent networks, infrastructure resilience, restoration planning, game-theoretic methods
