Carmen Irvin is the executive assistant in the Office of Access, Equity, and Equal Opportunity. Carmen has been at Rice University since 1984, starting as an employment clerk in Career Services. After three years in Career Services, she moved to AEEO and has served under five directors. As the executive assistant to Dr. Richard A Baker, Carmen compiles data used in the narrative portion of Rice University’s Affirmative Action Plan reported to the Department of Labor annually and coordinates EEO/Title IX seminars and staff development training for the department. Carmen attends the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s EEOC Training Institute annually and has had Title IX Investigator training.
Carmen is trained to process Affirmative Action Recruitment reports for faculty and staff, ensuring proper federal guidelines are met during hiring procedures. She is absolutely circumspect in dealing with confidential information and sensitive issues regarding faculty, staff, and student complaints. She also manages the daily office activities, including managing the department calendar and reconciling expense reports.
